The first day of the new year always finds me filled with hope and excitement.  I take time to write down my goals for the year and to share those with others close to me.  Jay and I talk about goals we have for our family and what we want to accomplish during the year.  It is generally a day filled with energy.

So, What Happens?

But then, January turns to February and then into March and by the time April rolls around, somehow the excitement about what I was working on fades away and gets lost in the day to day shuffle.  Anyone else find this happening year after year?  

Pretty sure I’m not alone in this….

I have been thinking about this over the last couple of weeks and decided that it’s because I often set goals, but then forget to keep checking in on them and reviewing how things are going…I forget to reflect.  BUT–reflection is the final key to the goal setting process. 

The Importance of Reflection

I wrote about the importance of Taking Time For Reflection in 2018 (which you can read in it’s entirety HERE) where I highlight the reasons why reflection is so important. So, today, on the first day of 2019, I thought I’d share what I’m going to be doing this year to make sure I’m reflecting regularly and intentionally about  my goals.  Here is a list of the strategies I’m going to implement:

4 Strategies to Stay Focused On Your Goals

  1. Morning Routine: This year I am getting serious about my Morning Routine.  It is one of the only times that the house is quiet and I can do what I need to do for me.  During my Morning Routine I have  time built in for journaling and reflection already, so what I’m going to do is make sure I read my goals every day before I journal.  That way they are fresh in my head daily. 
  2. Weekly Planning: My typical M.O. is to squish in planning for the week on Sunday evening before bed.  This is NOT an effective strategy. So in 2019 I will be planning for the upcoming week on Saturday mornings.  I will have energy and will have more time to think seriously about my goals.  
  3. Monthly Mini Mastermind: I am super excited to be partnering with a couple of awesome Mom Boss friends of mine to work on achieving our goals. We realized that it would be helpful for us to have dedicated time to reflect, strategize, and (perhaps most importantly) have accountability.  I know that these monthly times are going to help me stay focused on some longer term goals. Another thing they’ll offer-Accountability. 
  4. Quarterly Escapes: I have made the commitment to spend time at the end of each quarter alone and out of my house for an entire day (maybe even overnight *gasp*).  I am planning to head to the beach on these days and take all my work items with me. Each quarter I’m going to use this time to reflect on my goals and strategize the next 12 weeks.  

Consistency is Key

What I know is that I have some BIG goals for 2019 and I will reach them. BUT only if I take the time to stay focused and am consistent in my reflection practices.
